Welcome to The Word Seasoned with Salt!

The author, Sherry Owolabi, is the Pastor of Baginton Road URC, a United Reformed Church in South Coventry. She was appointed in April 2024. Sherry graduated with a Master’s in Theology in 2021, and the ‘Word Seasoned with Salt’ was born a few years later, in early 2023. It was created out of a passion and vision to bring authentic teaching, wisdom, insight and revelation from God’s word.

Where did the inspiration for the ‘Word Seasoned with Salt’ stem from?

On the 15th February, 2023, the Lord gave me the name of this website in a revelation. We know that God created the whole universe by the power of His spoken word (Hebrews 11:3). And as we are created in God’s image, our words are powerful; the Bible teaches us this. The power to use words is a unique and powerful gift from God and there is one scripture where believers are encouraged to let their ‘words be seasoned with salt.’ (Colossians 4:6).

Why should our words be seasoned with salt?

We have used salt for centuries to season food, enhance its flavour, and effectively preserve it.

As I pondered this, I realised that our words are so important. Our words are powerful and should impact our environments, situations and conversations. Our words should demonstrate to others the truth of the gospel. They should reveal how the gospel of our Lord Jesus has transformed our lives. Salt brings flavour to our food; the right amount completely transforms the meal. Likewise, our words should bring unique and tasteful flavour to our everyday interactions. In this way, we can edify, build others up, and transform their lives.

Using words seasoned with salt, we bring:

Wisdom: Our wise words can provide insight, understanding and helpful direction.

Preservation: We preserve goodness and vitality when we speak fresh, life-giving words. When we do, they inspire us to flourish, increase, develop, grow, and mature.

Healing: When we speak healing words, we encourage wholeness, which causes us to thrive. An essential thing to remember here is that words seasoned with salt might sting and hurt. However, speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) paves the way for healing. The Lord desires that we are healthy in spirit, body and soul. However, to maintain good health holistically, we need to remain in the truth of His word.

I pray that as you participate on this platform, these words of the Lord will bring you wisdom and insight. May they preserve every goodness inside you and cause you to flourish. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
